3 University Scenarios
Scenario 1: Full Replacement (new private university / modernization)
Profile: New online-only college, private university up to ~5,000 students, institution running legacy Moodle looking to modernize.
Why Studeia:
- TCO 60β85% lower than Canvas/Blackboard Enterprise
- Modern UX without 6 months of staff training
- Real AI tutor (vs. nascent Canvas AI/Blackboard AI)
- Native white-label mobile B2B app
- Setup in 1β2 months vs. 6β12 months for Canvas/Blackboard
- Native data-privacy compliance (data stored in Brazil)
- Support in Portuguese
Migration: IMS Common Cartridge from Moodle/Blackboard + users via SCIM. Legacy courses via LTI 1.3 initially.
Scenario 2: Complementary via LTI (large public university already on Canvas/Moodle)
Profile: Large public universities with Moodle/Canvas in production for 5β15 years.
Why Studeia as an LTI tool:
- Specific new courses (e.g., a Computer Science course with a real AI tutor) without disinvesting from the main LMS
- A pilot department experiments before an institutional decision
- Integrates with the existing gradebook via AGS grade passback
- Students use their institutional SSO (Shibboleth) β no new password
- Low cost: only the instructor and students of that specific course are billed (R$3β8k/month for 100 students)
LTI Setup (15 minutes):
- Studeia generates Tool URL + Client ID + JWKS at /institution/lti-tools
- Canvas Admin β Settings β Apps β Add App β By Client ID β paste
- Configure placements (course navigation, assignment)
- In a Canvas course: add the Studeia tool
Scenario 3: New Online-Only College
Profile: Recently authorized 100% online college, focused on competitive tuition.
Why Studeia:
- Complete platform (CMS + AI tutor + gradebook + LTI + mobile) with no per-module charges
- Mobile B2B is essential (online students primarily use their phones)
- AI tutor reduces human tutoring costs (1 human tutor for 200β500 students vs. 1 for 30β50 without AI)
- Verifiable OB 3.0 (Open Badges 3.0) certificates (W3C VC) β a differentiator vs. competing colleges
Critical Features for Universities
Professional Gradebook
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Weighted categories | Exams 60% + Assignments 30% + Participation 10% |
| Multi-criteria rubrics | Each with a 1β5 or custom scale + level descriptions |
| Drop lowest N | Drop the N lowest scores per category (e.g., drop 2 lowest quizzes) |
| Integrity flags | Inline ShieldAlert on quizzes with tab switches / copy-paste / time anomalies |
| Item publishing | isPublished controls grade visibility (scheduled release by date: roadmap) |
| Late penalty | Roadmap (automatic late penalty not yet applied) |
| CSV export | Weighted final grade by category + drop-lowest; compatible with Google Sheets, Excel, and legacy systems |
Quiz Engine with Psychometric Analytics
For university assessments (exams, assignments):
- 12 question types (multiple_choice, true_false, multiple_select, fill_blank, matching, ordering, numeric with tolerance, short_answer with normalization, cloze, hotspot, essay, calculated)
- Configuration: maxAttempts, timeLimitMinutes, shuffleQuestions/Options, accessCode, scoringPolicy
- Analytics: item difficulty, point-biserial discrimination, distractor analysis, Cronbach's alpha, score distribution
- Reusable question bank + RAG ingestion so the AI tutor can cite your own questions
LTI 1.3 Tool Provider
Studeia works as a tool inside Canvas/Moodle/Blackboard:
Student in Canvas
β clicks "Studeia Module" (LTI launch)
Automatic OIDC authentication
β
Studeia renders inside the Canvas iframe (or new tab)
β
Student completes activity
β
Studeia sends grade via AGS endpoint:
POST {issuer}/api/lti/courses/{courseId}/line_items/{itemId}/scores
β
Grade appears in the Canvas gradebook (Canvas remains source-of-truth)
No data migration required β Canvas remains the source-of-truth for courses.
Enterprise SSO
Enterprise plan. Setup 1β2 days:
- Settings > SSO > Add Provider > SAML or OIDC
- Paste XML metadata (SAML) or discovery URL (OIDC) from your institutional IdP
- Allowed domains (e.g., @student.university.edu)
- SCIM 2.0 for automatic provisioning (new university users are enrolled automatically)
- Group β Course mapping (e.g., group "Computer Science 2026.1" auto-enrolls in the semester's courses)
Isolated Multi-Tenancy per Unit
Large universities can run Studeia as one tenant per unit (School of Engineering, School of Medicine, Online Division, etc.) with:
- Data isolated per unit
- Separate white-label branding (color + logo per unit)
- Local admin per unit (institution_admin)
- Provost/VP Academic Affairs as global admin (access to all units)
TCO Comparison β 5,000-Student University / 3 Years
| Item | Blackboard / Canvas Enterprise | Studeia Enterprise |
|---|---|---|
| License | USD $40kβ125k/year Γ 3 = R$600kβ1.875M | R$108kβ288k (R$3β8k/month Γ 36) |
| Setup + implementation | USD $25kβ100k | R$0β30k |
| Staff training | USD $10kβ50k | Included (docs) |
| Custom development | USD $50kβ300k | Via public API |
| AI costs (5,000 Γ R$4 Γ 36) | N/A (Canvas AI is extra) | R$720k |
| 3-Year Total | R$1.5Mβ3.5M | R$828kβ1.038M |
Studeia is typically 30β60% cheaper. The gap narrows because AI costs scale proportionally.
Honest Gaps
- Academic accreditation badges: Studeia does not yet have specific MEC (Brazil's Ministry of Education) seals (expected in 2026 H2). For federal public universities, this may be a blocker.
- SCORM 2004: NOT supported. For legacy SCORM courses, you'll need to recreate them or keep the old LMS (via LTI).
- Brazilian academic systems (Banner, SISU, e-MEC): Integration via the public API is possible but requires custom development.
- Academic research: We have no dedicated module for research management, papers, or study groups. Our focus is teaching.
- Digital libraries: We don't integrate with Pearson, Cengage, etc. However, Drive/OneDrive sync works for your own materials.
None of these gaps block Scenarios 1β3 above β which is exactly why the recommended path is a low-risk pilot.
From Plan to Practice
Scenario 2 (LTI) exists precisely to eliminate decision risk: a department pilots Studeia inside its existing Canvas/Moodle environment, with grades syncing via AGS, with zero migration. Create a free Demo account, configure LTI in 15 minutes, and let one course compare the AI tutor in practice. Pricing and details on the university page.
